What is portrait photography?

Portrait photography is about capturing the essence, personality, identity and attitude of a person utilizing backgrounds, lighting and posing.

While this definition may sound simple, portrait photography can be one of the most challenging forms of photography to master. The goal is to capture a photo that appears both natural and prepared to allow the subject’s personality to show through.

As long as the portrait photographer can effectively capture the subject’s character, the equipment he/she uses does not really matter. While it always helps to have equipment that is state of the art, it is really not needed.

How to prepare for a session?

How to prepare for a photo session?

Preparation for the photo shoot is one of the most important things because it has a big impact on the final result of your photos. Especially for you, we have prepared a short guide on how to prepare for the session.

How to dress for the photo shoot?

Regardless of whether it is a lifestyle, pregnancy, newborn or family session - wear what you like! Do not forcefully wear clothes in which you do not feel well - your discomfort will be visible in the photos. Keep in mind that the whole thing is neutral and natural.

1. First of all, focus on comfort and warmth.

Choose your outfit for the place where the session is to take place. Will it be a studio, city or forest, or maybe your apartment? Clothes can either harmonize with the colour of the place or distinguish you by contrast. Keep in mind that the whole thing should be natural, and clothes must more or less fit the context of the place. Don't wear awkward sets just because they're pretty.

High heels and an elegant dress for ladies are a good idea for a session in the city, but not entirely in the forest. Also, consider the time of the year - greyish colours in the case of spring, summer and sun can take away the mood of warmth and weather. For girls, a dress or a skirt is welcome. Gentlemen, we encourage you to put on a plain one-colour T-Shirt, a long-sleeved T-shirt or a regular shirt. In the case of outdoor sessions and in the studio - ladies can also use the styling that we have available in the wardrobe.

2. Remember about neutral, natural colors.

Avoid bright, neon colours that distract too much from the emotions in your photo. More subdued, pastel colours look better in the photos. Beiges, browns, pastels, whites, dark orange, khaki or navy blue are best for the colours of the earth and trees. However, if you love vivid colours and you feel best in them, choose one, e.g. a yellow skirt with a white blouse will also create an interesting composition. However, do not dress in the same colour. And if anything - it should be in various shades and tones, preferably with some distinctive patterns on one of the clothes.

3. Avoid T-shirts with large and visible inscriptions and graphics.

Unfortunately, clothes with superheroes fall off here. They distract too much from you. This does not mean, however, that the clothes have to be single-coloured. Patterns are welcome, as long as there aren't too many and not everyone has them.

4. Don't forget about the accessories.

Properly selected colours will be a beautiful accent. The accessories are various: earrings, beads, a hat, a shawl, a scarf, headbands, wreaths, cufflinks, small sweet purses, braces and belts for men. You don't have to have them for the entire session, you can only wear them for a moment.

5. What is the best way to start then?

The easiest way is to adjust everything by selecting one element - e.g. children's clothes. You can match other clothes to it. Remember not to dress your family in the same colours or T-shirts. Diversity is welcome - and even much needed. You also don't have to invent unknown colours. Sometimes very similar ones are enough, but for example with a different material.

Makeup, hairstyle, nails - should I make an appointment somewhere?

Before the session, it is worth thinking about using the services of a make-up artist or hairdresser, which will make you feel even more special and beautiful.

If you decide to apply makeup yourself - avoid glitter and excess highlighter. It's good if the makeup is matte. In the case of self-styling - make delicate curls, if you like straight hair - straighten it. We encourage you to leave your hair loose.

Nails - if you do not paint them every day, paint them with clear varnish to make them shine. You can also use the services of a beautician. A French manicure or one colour on all nails, e.g. beige, or neutral, will work best.

Pregnancy session in the studio - what else should I take care of?

If you decide to take your dresses to the session, make sure that they emphasize the belly, preferably long and cut under the bust. Do not forget about a set of underwear, a smooth white and beige, the flesh-coloured fabric will work best.

100 years of Olympus

WE WANT YOUR PHOTO!

This was the title of an email I received a few months ago from Olympus Europe. Of course, I was surprised and excited. To be involved in their project it is some distinction for me. Photo of my auntie on the main page of the project, look nice!

Obviously, I am a user of Olympus camera and this photo was the only one I had at the time on Olympus social media profile. I am glad that the picture is being noticed! Who would not be?!

More details about the project you can find out by clicking a photo below.
